Jazwinski clearly pitied the policeman. He felt guilty that he could live his life to the fullest while the policeman’s son would never draw another breath. But this is a feeling a lot of former servicepeople have to learn to live with. What is known as survivor’s guilt is a large part of PTSD, where a veteran will be overwhelmed with guilt-related emotions for having survived a combat situation while his brothers and sisters in arms died.

All that William could do was provide comfort and sympathy for the sorrowful dad. He could only express his regret. William had never expected that he would end up trying to comfort a grieving police officer when he woke up that day. But the emotional situation would not last long, as the police officer soon managed to stop the tears from flowing. The policeman then pulled himself together, nearly dismissing William, before noticing an item on his dashboard.
