The policeman clearly had more need of William, continuing to interrogate him. Specifically, the policeman wished to discover just where William had been assigned. He asked William where he had served. This seemed to be far bigger than simple curiosity. William was used to talking to non-military civilians about his time spent serving, and the tone of this conversation was different. He might not have known what was about to go down, but William was happy to help.
