Joel just couldn’t understand why Richard was on the warpath to expose his actual father. None of the boys shared his goals. Joel finally admitted that he had cut off communication with his father for so long because he was so bullheadedly pursuing this mystery man. Richard might have thought that he was on some noble crusade that had the boys’ best wishes in mind, but he was ironically further deteriorating his relationship with them.

Joel went on to further expose Richard, detailing just how manipulative he was, and how he was the kind of character he’d rather avoid. It was at fifteen that he claimed he started seeing Richard for who he was. Despite all this mud-slinging, Joel maintained that their familial bond stood. He understood that this was a complex situation and that Richard was just doing what he thought was right. He did, however, have a hard question for Richard.
