The pair were months into their mission when they began to boldly voice their concerns for society. There was an obvious lack in the churches’ preaching of the good word. This faithful couple believed that their true mission had been revealed to them. Sadly, they were summoned to leave their calling before they could fulfill their objectives. This community never left their minds as they headed back to Mississippi unsatisfied. It was upon their return that life-changing developments waited in store.

With the couple now transitioning back into their ordinary daily life, Aaron was struck with inspiration. All his life, he had wished to attain a Master of Divinity, which is a pastoral degree. He then decided to go for it, enrolling with the Jackson-based Reformed Theological Seminary in Mississippi. Throughout this period, the pair wished nothing more than to head back to Honduras. As the years began to drift, they started considering bringing a child into the world, and whether they would be adopting or doing their own thing.

The couple wished to dedicate themselves to their local society within Mississippi as well. Their place as missionaries inspired them to work harder for their purposes. Aaron was employed at the time by Yazoo City’s Second Presbyterian, where he worked as a youth director and intern. The couple commenced looking more at adoption. In an interview with the Washington Post, Aaron commented that “We see the protection of children not as charity, nor as part of a political agenda, but as something near to the heart of God.”

They maintained that they would only adopt a child of color for this reason. It was their belief that if God wished for them to bring a white child into the world, Rachel would fall pregnant. What actually ended up happening?

The next few weeks were filled with plenty of homework as they learned more about the related scientific process. Aaron expanded how “We live in a world with hundreds of thousands of embryos frozen in the United States alone. Most who aren’t selected by their biological parents are donated to science or destroyed or kept frozen.” As one can imagine, many embryos are lost in this way, but this process also allows some potential parents to embrace and secure a future with children in it. Rachel and Aaron became immediately taken by the prospect.

The two confirmed their agreement and contacted the National Embryo Donation Center, commencing their incredible journey.

Rachel was euphoric to commence the whole journey, but also understandably nervous about certain things. Certainly, her anxieties were justified, given how much stress she was bound to encounter along the way. She was headed for a process of treatments to facilitate her reproductive system for embryo development. Thankfully, there were no issues. During late 2015, in September, Rachel commenced her preparations for in-vitro fertilization. The couple began biding their time, awaiting their fates. This form of ‘adoption’ is quite challenging in different ways.

Various obstacles had to be conquered during this process, just as with conventional in-vitro fertilization. The odds had to be in their favor. Several months’ worth of hormone treatments must be undertaken prior to the eventual operation. Scarily, there was a 90% chance that the embryo would fail to take. More challenges included the actual pricing, as just one attempt may be billed at a maximum of $15,000! The couple was certainly anxious, struggling to locate insurance firms that would cover the liabilities at hand.

The couple was enduring this testing time while also gearing up to head back to Honduras for more Christian evangelical work. Whether the embryo would take weighed heavily on their minds. Still, they all hopped onto a plane headed for Honduras with little hesitation. A month and a half following the implantation, Rachel and Aaron visited a nearby hospital to check whether the embryos had landed safely. While discussing the matter with a doctor with whatever Spanish they knew, they tried to explain their case.

The good doctor was rather perplexed while dealing with this case. There were some inherent irregularities with this in-vitro fertilization process he knew well. He checked with the couple as to whether they were sure that just two embryos had been inserted. The pair were then informed that their babies were safe, and they were euphoric. It wasn’t all laughter and smiles, however, as the doctor remained curious about the number of people in the room…

The couple was excitedly awaiting their new family members, but their elation paled in comparison to that of Ford and Catherine. In a statement made on Facebook, Aaron said, “I felt sheer delight during this pregnancy watching my son and daughter, with his dark brown skin and her with the ringlet hair and slightly tan skin, kiss my white wife’s growing belly. Each evening they said goodnight to those three growing little girls in her belly.” The kids could not wait to hold their new sisters.

It was during 2016 that Anne, Ryley, and Whitley were welcomed to the world. Despite being a surprising bunch, they were ecstatically brought into the family. Aaron and Rachel couldn’t be happier. They thanked God for rewarding them with such cute, healthy, and beautiful babies. Aaron believes that his children are the best things in his life, one that was already filled with so much goodness. He believed that his fantastic family was a preview of heaven waiting for them.

The kids may not have been biologically related to the couple, but that didn’t stop them from regarding them as theirs. They adored the splendor of a mixed family. Aaron commented how the diversity of their family was what made it so splendid and enriching. It evolved them as parents in how they behaved and thought. Aaron loves being the sole Caucasian hanging out with a group of his African American buddies while getting his son groomed.

The expanding family enjoyed a flood of encouragement. The people around them, both close and friendly, had so much praise. Aaron spoke of how, “It’s been heartening to see virtually all of our friends and family express overwhelming support for our family and the unusual ways we’ve built it.” The family was overjoyed at having accomplished their objectives. This vision, which breaks away from the stereotypical family, is one that happily blossomed against the backdrop of America’s troubled past.

Of course, not everyone empathized with the couple’s family structure, with the Southern American states being particularly intolerant. There were plenty of people, both black and white, who would openly show their revulsion for the mixed family. Not everyone was open to such a family structure, and many were plain in their backward mentalities. However, there were also plenty of people who expressed their appreciation for the colorful family, such as a doctor who tenderly hugged and prayed for their son.

Disapproving stares will probably always follow the interracial family, and the Halberts know full well that many people despise varied families. Amazingly, they don’t let the negativity get to them, with Aaron upholding that Jesus Christ came to Earth to unite people of all races and backgrounds. He believes that embracing diversity is the best way to improve the world. The many different kinds of people, who they believe God created with such inspiring intelligence, deserve to be admired and not hated.

“Embryo adoption can also be very difficult for the donor family. I know the decision to donate your frozen embryos for adoption is probably the hardest you’ll ever make,” Rachel explained. She does not judge those who are forced to release their children. Parenting can easily become a complicating issue for any couple. Rachel continued with how hurtful it is knowing that other people are rearing one’s, natural kids. People give up their children for a variety of difficult reasons.

Despite embryo adoption not being the most popular choice for potential parents, it was the ideal one for our couple. They were blessed with triplets while simultaneously enjoying the incredible pregnancy process. Rachel defines the process as special and wonderful, where she enjoyed everything that a normal mother could ask for. The mother also believes that natural parents who decide to give up their embryos must be praised for their strength. This is never an easy decision for anyone.

That being said, countless embryos await prospective hosts. The embryos which Rachel undertook had been in storage for a dozen years. Rachel outlined how, “We were not saying that those lives are any more important than the lives of babies and children waiting to be adopted all across the world. No, they are not any more important, but they are no less important either. All of our children’s lives are valued.”

Mothers across the planet are united in their lack of personal time, and that’s with just one or a few kids! Rachel and Aaron undoubtedly have their hands completely full taking care of their children properly. Rachel detailed how her motherhood isn’t that different from others, however. She spends her time cooking, cleaning, and doing chores while raising the kids properly. She ensures that they all have presentable appearances and plays with them all as much as possible while squeezing in a few minutes to feed herself!

The couple continues to maintain their missionary work.
