Notebooks always have margins, and you may not be entirely sure why. What’s more curious is that the margins seem to differ according to the grades. While they may vary as things tend to get more tricky the older you get, the general reason margins exist on lined paper is actually strangely related to rats. Rat infestations used to be a bit too common, and as rats would chew paper, people decided that lined paper should have margins to encourage those using notebooks to write further from the edge of the paper, therefore, saving the information from hungry rats. Now margins are simply a standard design for lined notebooks.
