He noted that his training taught him how to operate all of the tools and equipment of the department. As they were dispatched one night, he said he was in charge of the second engine as the first was already on an emergency call.

There were three vehicles involved in a crash at the interstate close to them. Although the accident took up the left-most lane out of the four main ones, the protocol is to block the closest lane to any accident, to protect the injured and the emergency staff. While they were still attending to the victims, a trooper came over indicating they should move the engine from the second lane to have three lanes in operation. The Redditor indicated to the police that it was a protective reinforcement for the workers until they were finished.
