If you’ve always wanted to drive one of Jimi Hendrix’s late 1960s Corvettes through downtown traffic, you’ll have to be patient and wait for a while. During the short time, he was known as a living legend, Hendrix owned two Chevrolet Corvette Coups, but both were totaled in accidents. The original one is said to have been smashed so severely that it couldn’t be used again during a performance by Cream near Benedict Canyon in Los Angeles in September 1968.

On the other hand, Amateur detectives think this date is wrong because Cream didn’t even play anywhere near Los Angeles until October. But then again, why is there time? Tony Iommi, the guitarist for Black Sabbath and creator of the heavy metal riff, told me this story. At the beginning of Sabbath’s career, he often hung out with Led Zeppelin’s drummer, John Bonham. He said they spent a lot of time drinking and driving erratically around the neighborhood, which scared the people living there.
Iommi said he and John used to hang out together a lot. We used to hang out at nightclubs and then have parties at his house. If I say so myself, he was a pretty crazy guy. I’d go to parties at his home. Except for when we went out, and he drove, it was a lot of fun. In those days, the law wasn’t as strict as it is now because he often got very drunk and drove himself home.

When I think about it, there was this one time when he had just gotten a brand new car, like a Maserati, and we were driving the wrong way on this road. I told him, “We’re going the wrong way.” He didn’t really understand what I meant. Because England has islands that you have to drive around to get to different lanes, and he goes straight over the island, and we got stuck on this island, on the top, and when we pulled off the bottom of his new car, he said, “It’s OK.” So ‘oh no.’ We had to get out of the car and call a taxi because he had left it there.”
