Remorse
Gerald felt his heartbreak after reading that short but devastating message in the crib. He immediately realized the tragedy that Valerie had suffered and felt guilty for having purchased the thing. This was obviously an intensely emotional possession for the woman.
Thankfully, Gerald was the kind of man who took responsibility for his actions, even if he had never meant to hurt Valerie. He was also a handy gentleman and began working on the crib to turn it from something sad, into something incredible.
Meaningful Connection
Gerald and Lorene happened to have raised 15 kids and were aware of the pain that Valerie must have been feeling. The elderly couple had lost a grandkid and knew, at least in part, what Valerie must have gone through.
They then knew that they could never accept this crib. It was too important to Valerie, even if she was doing her best to move on. Gerald then decided to put a magical spin on the crib in the best way that he knew how.
