Schneider, the Northern New Jersey regional manager for Herpetological Associates, and his colleague scientist Burkett were doing an audit of the Pine Barrens in New Jersey at the time of the incident. This expanse of the coastal plain often referred to as “The Pines,” comprises extensive woods and extends over several counties in the state’s extreme southernmost region.

And in an August 2019 interview with Long Beach Island publication The Sandpaper, Burkett detailed the circumstances around his and Schneider’s unnerving finding. He indicated, for example, that female snakes often utilized the property the duo was looking at to give birth to their young, which naturally made it a destination of interest to herpetologists and other wildlife enthusiasts.
