The fact that hunting Burmese pythons requires no license and that there are no limitations on when they may be pursued is rather remarkable. In fact, some people have made the tracking of these snakes into something of a sport, with the yearly Python Challenge urging public members to catch as many of the nasty pests as they can.

The Python Cowboy

Among those who have been incredibly successful in clearing the region of the snakes is local wildlife trapper Mike Kimmel, who calls himself a “python cowboy.” During the 2020 Python Challenge, competitors hunted 80 of the invasive species, with Kimmel bringing home eight of them. Despite this, it has hardly made a difference in the Everglades’ population, which is believed to number tens of thousands.
