After moving in, he made a few changes that many believed caused chaos in the neighborhood. Apparently, he painted his house pink but not everyone accepted it as he had hoped. He was shocked and didn’t know what to say from the harsh reactions.

After searching for a while, Emilio Rodriguez, a Texas resident, found the home he thought was perfect for him. Being disabled, he wanted to ensure the home he chose had all the amenities and features that could accommodate his lifestyle.

Rodriguez always had the plan to find a home that would allow him to get creative with interior designing as well as do some cool works to the exterior look. However, in order for him to accomplish this goal, he had to find a neighborhood that didn’t have a Homeowner Association. This was so because they were the only people who could put a stop order on his plan.

Emilio had an awful accident when he was a teenager and it left him bound to a wheelchair. His condition put him in a position where he had to do a series of medical checkups…lots of which he had to do at home.

Emilio was now in a position where he had a big decision to make. Being around a group of conservative neighbors, Emilio somehow knew his decision would pull a reaction from them…a negative one at that.

Emilio decided to take it slow with the renovation so he started by painting the back of his house in pink. Yeah, you read right…pink! The entire thing! He was eager to get going with more work but the feedback he was getting so far was not the nicest. Everyone who passed by gave him a weird look.

A lot of people around the area heard about it and came to see things for themselves. While some were just curious, others had something to say about it. Interestingly, they were planning something against Emilio that he wasn’t aware of and one that would shock him.

After some time, Emilio noticed he started to receive a few threats and they got worse as the days went by. One senior member accused Emilio of ruining their neighborhood with his stupid decision.

Seeing he was living alone, Emilio started to fear for his life but it was nothing new to him especially seeing he was an artist. It was the norm for people to get upset with him all because of his lifestyle. But, it was strange to him that so many people could get upset just because he painted his house in pink.

On one occasion, Emilio noticed a group of people gathered in front of his house. They were discussing many things, and he overheard them talking about things relating to his home. What exactly were these people up to?

He rolled his wheelchair out and went to greet them but they only packed up and walked away. He could hear them making plans about how to deal with the pink house and like anyone else, this made Emilio start to worry and develop fear once more.

A lot of people were quite upset with the artist just because he wanted to express himself. Interestingly, the neighbors went as far as to call the police and cook up some lies about things that were supposedly “going on in the house.” This only mounted pressure on him to change the house color.

When Emilio saw the police, he thought they were coming on his behalf due to the harassment he was receiving. However, he was wrong. They said someone reported suspicious activities taking place inside the house but the cops didn’t find anything wrong.

But after moving in, Emilio felt the need to change so now it’s different from everything else. The thing about it is that it wasn’t the light shade of pink that one would expect. It was the deep and loud “Pepto-Bismol” pink. Pink was Emilio’s favorite color and it brought him comfort every time he is associated with it.

After the encounter with his neighbors, Emilio proved a bit more stubborn to them as he had plans which he considered very ambitious to him.

Emilio had plans to cover more of the property in pink as he was planning to paint even the driveway in pink. Just imagine, he wanted to remove the grass and install pink tile blocks in the yard. To make matters worse for him to the neighbors, he wanted to paint his wheelchair pink, and even get a pink car.

The whole scene and confrontation Emilio faced with his neighbors over painting his property in pink started to attract the attention of local media.

During an interview with KEYE, Emilio stated to the world that his favorite color was pink and this led him to find a neighborhood that wouldn’t restrict him. Seeing this neighborhood didn’t have a Homeowner Association, he thought it was perfect to make his dreama come alive. With a proud feeling, Emilio noted how much he loved the house and didn’t understand why people had such a negative reaction to it.

Even with the negative feedback from everyone in the neighborhood, Emilio was still clueless as to why anyone would have a problem with the house. He was on a mission to keep a little culture going “Keep Austin Weird”. With everyone finding fault with his work, Emilio kept noting that the color brought him some sense of peace.
