Rico had a distinct advantage, namely that he didn’t have to go through security. It couldn’t have been a dangerous package, considering it was thrown out, rather than being sent for additional screening. Rico planned to take the package home with him. At this stage, he figured the package must be something special, as an ordinary item would have been allowed on the plane.
