When you check into a hotel, be mindful not to put your bags on the bed because whether you believe it or not, bed bugs are something to worry about. Even if you are in a five-star hotel, you will want to do some investigation like checking the sheets, chairs, and tables, so leave your bags in the bathroom while you make the checks. As a rule of thumb keep as many of your personal possessions well away from the bed, even if it makes packing and unpacking more difficult.

It may be best to call your scheduled hotel in advance even if you don’t have a close connection with the manager or anyone in that position. Travel blogger Mick Richard noted that once it is your first time, you should call in advance to get yourself familiar with the hotel and its surroundings.
