The Fixer Upper Couple

This couple may be known for giving homes incredible makeovers, although, their personal story is ultimately romantic. They grew up together in the same state and they also attended the same college in Texas, however being three years apart in college, the couple actually only met at long last in 2001. They might have seen each other often, at least in the distance, but only maturity and the passage of time could bring them together.

After seeing a photograph of Joanna in a shop owned by her father, Chip simply knew she would be his wife. Lucky for Chip, he was quite right! The couple married in 2003. Chip and Joanna both always knew that they would want to renovate their own perfect family home.

A Tiny Farmhouse

The couple purchased a small farmhouse in 2012. The farmhouse was only a two-bedroom home with an attic. However, the house was much too small for their large family of seven. Luckily, Chip and Joanna were not too concerned about the size.

It was the land that came with the farmhouse that the couple simply could not resist. The incredible oak trees that surrounded the farmhouse could easily have been the most attractive selling point. Chip and Joanna knew they would have to fix up the farmhouse, although, how would they find it manageable to create enough space for seven people in the tiny two-bedroom home?

Committing To The Project

The couple had no idea that the project would take as long as 18 months to complete. In addition to the big project, they would have to divide their time to take on other renovations as well.

Chip and Joanna stumbled upon plenty of gems while renovating their home, such as paperwork that dated back to 1895. There was no saying just how old the little farmhouse might be. However, Joanna fell in love with the fact that the house may have a story of its own.

Ready At Last

A full year and a half later, in October 2013, the farmhouse was finally ready for the family of seven to settle in.

Joanna was hoping to maintain the character of the old house as much as possible while renovating, which meant only one extended structure would be added on. The extension would be the master bedroom. Maintaining the original character did not prevent Joanna from adding in incredible fixtures and fittings to create the ultimate farmhouse.

Natural Colors

The color scheme of the house would be white with a palette of neutral colors. Joanna explained her choices on the blog created for their farmhouse renovation journey.

The couple managed to keep the outside of the farmhouse as traditional and classic as ever, adding an appealing white finish to complement the wooden beams perfectly. The surrounding oak trees that grabbed the couple’s attention at first seem to add to the quality appeal of the little house.

A Look Inside

Chip and Joanna Gaines opted for neutral colors on the inside too to complement the outside of the house. The beautiful double doors open onto a spacious and bright entrance hall that has been decorated with a charming grey and white scheme.

We all could have guessed that the inside of the farmhouse would be simply gorgeous, no less could be expected from the talented and tasteful Joanna. The decor, with things such as the metal coat rack along with the script wall-art, finishes the design perfectly.

Creating A Flow

Chip and Joanna knew they would need to make the design of the interior flow, without adding too much. The result would be knocking down several walls and restructuring the layout of the rooms.

We all know that the kitchen is usually one of the biggest selling points of any home. The couple used white tiling to enhance the white ceiling and added accent black fixtures and black fittings for contrast, as well as a breakfast bar for the whole family to eat together comfortably.

Lounge And Diner Included

At the other end of the kitchen, the couple included a lounge and a diner. The multi-purpose room proves just how well the interior plan of the house flows together. The dining table is large enough for the whole family and the cozy couch offers a great place for everyone to relax.

The accessories have been picked out and placed perfectly to complement the design plan. It truly seems as though nothing is out of place in the multi-purpose room. Joanna’s Magnolia Market is an extremely popular place where she sells her own furnishings and accessories, and now we know why it is so incredibly popular.

Perfectly Relaxing

On taking a closer look at the lounge area, we can see just how relaxing the design and furnishings are. Relaxing is an important part of the day, especially when you have five children to keep you busy.

The couple’s design also demonstrates how much the little things can make all the difference. Right throughout the farmhouse, the couple has added finishing touches that grab attention and tie the whole design plan together perfectly. From an eye-catching vase of flowers to accent ornate lamps.

Most of these finishing touches can be found at the Magnolia Market, which is available both offline and online. Joanna enjoys sharing her incredible design talent and her home expresses perfectly just how talented she truly is.

Chip And Joanna’s Master Room

While the entire home was repaired and renovated to suit the needs of the whole family, the master bedroom is actually the only extension onto the farmhouse.

Joanna used old doors to enhance the classic look of the home and she also used the original flooring from the attic to maintain the charm of the old farmhouse. However, the most eye-catching piece in the room is undeniably the beautiful bed. You can bet that many pleasant nights of rest are enjoyed here.

Ultimately Relaxing

The couple is usually quite busy, which is understandable as Chip and Joanna have numerous businesses to manage and their spin-off series to focus on, not to mention five children to care for, which makes it amazing that they still manage to find the much-needed time to relax.

When it is finally time to relax, the couple enjoys spending most of their free time in this charming and cozy room. In the winter, the couple makes a fire in this fireplace that keeps the room snuggly and warm.

The En-Suite Bathroom

The bathroom should not be overlooked when designing a home either, and a look inside the beautiful en-suite bathroom in the master bedroom shows that Chip and Joanna are completely aware of this, with the luxurious free-standing tub and plenty of attention-grabbing touches.

Even the bathroom door doubles up as a beautiful accent piece. Joanna clearly was not joking about spending so much time looking for old doors to utilize in her home. The black lantern fixtures simply finish off the amazing look of the door.

Even though you might have expected the excessive use of pink, Joanna maintained the neutral colors and opted for a mostly white room (although slightly questionable for a child’s room, but ok!) with incredibly beautiful accent pieces such as the charming dollhouse that looks quite a bit like the family’s farmhouse.

The Boys Room

Joanna and Chip also have three sons, their last child, Crew Gaines, was born in June 2018. Interestingly, the couple has had their children in a boy-girl-boy pattern.

The couple’s oldest son, Drake, is 13 years old and their second son, Duke, is 10 years old. The boy’s room incorporates an adventurous theme and leaves adequate space for playtime. The extra bed could be a tell-tale sign that the couple may be planning a fourth boy, although, it could also be for a visiting friend.

The boys have plenty of things to keep themselves busy in their room. There is a large map on the wall that explains the boy’s interest in adventure. There are also ladders just to climb for fun.

Chip and Joanna have maintained the neutral color choice right through their home and the boy’s room is no exception. The couple has ensured that both the children’s rooms are remarkably suitable for young minds and there is enough space for physical activities.

The couple also added unbelievably eccentric touches to their home, such as their very own coffee bar. There will be no need for stops at the coffee shop for Chip and Joanna.

The children’s craft room can be found in the attic, which proves ideal for them to get in touch with their creative desires. The space is ultimately suitable for any arts-and-crafts projects and it is also quite far from the all-white and light furniture of the house, which is perfectly understandable.

Another Crafty Space

We could have guessed that one crafty area would not be enough for this art-loving family. Joanna made sure to include a craft room for her own use. Understandably, she would need a space to get working on all her big projects.

This also teaches the children important things about cleanliness and organization. You might think that this is more to keep the place tidy, but being neat and organized is an essential way to be raised. It is most appealing that everyone’s belongings have an ideal place.

Enough Play Space

Having several children suggests that there needs to be enough space for playtime. With all their games, play areas, and friends being invited over often, one might fear that things would get a bit claustrophobic. Luckily, Chip and Joanna have that covered.

The Possibility Of Selling

It just so happens that the Gaines family is truly happy with their life currently and has no intention of selling the house that they hope for their children to grow up in. The children love the farmhouse just as much as their parents do, although, there is no saying whether or not the couple will change their mind.
