If You Have Ever Found A Dryer Sheet Within A Mailbox, This Is Why It’s There

Published on 07/30/2021

So, you opened up the mailbox, only to find an odd thing inside: just one dryer sheet. Who would put this item in there, and why? Was the mailman suggesting that you need to do your laundry more often? Or is this some promotion that you were not made aware of? Once you remove it, it gets replaced the next day… OK, things are starting to get weird! We want you to know that this is a perfectly normal situation, or at least to mailmen it is!

Strange Methods

Certainly, someone is putting things in your mailbox, but who is it? Is this the local prankster up to his tricks again? You should rest assured that it is most likely your mailman. After all, he is the person who works with your mailbox, unless you do happen to have a trickster in the area. This wouldn’t be a very funny or effective prank, though, would it? Surely, there must be a method to this madness.

Confessions Of A Mailman

Don’t take our word for it, however. We have it on good word, particularly, a mailman’s. It was in 2021 that a mailman called Chris Strickley placated the masses with a post that he made on Reddit. He confessed that he was part of the dryer sheet operation, and that he puts these items inside mailboxes, and for quite some time now! His refreshing yet strange methods extend to Idaho and Oregon. He promised that he had a great reason for doing this.

Following The Trend

Strickley was not the mastermind behind this trend, however. It was in the same year that he spoke to NBC’s Today on the subject. “I began to see dryer sheets in people’s mailboxes at the start of spring. At first, I was confused but just left them in there. Later on, I noticed my supervisor had a box of them on their desk and would see other carriers taking handfuls out.” It seems that Strickley was inspired!

But Strickley did have some questions of his own. His curiosity was completely understandable, however, and he had to wonder why his colleagues were stuffing fistfuls of dryer sheets into their bags. Of course, he knew that other people would also want to know why mailmen are leaving these strange calling cards in their mailboxes. In response, Strickley took to Reddit to enlighten homeowners. This isn’t in the USPS manual, however! It is a novel invention…

Helpful Service Or Pseudoscience?

One USPS spokesperson spoke out on the subject with Today. He assured everyone that the Reddit post was not backed by the Postal Service. But it wasn’t just the spokesperson that was unsupportive. Academics and scientists weighed in to clear up whether this dryer sheet novelty even makes a difference or not. According to Sonja L. Swiger of Texas A&M University, the science is sketchy. She told Today that if there was any objective validity to what these mailmen are doing, it would be practically discussed. So, is this a good idea or not?

Online Skepticism

Then there were the responding Redditors who were skeptical of Strickley’s revelation. One Redditor was even fearful that there was some evil conspiracy conducting these dryer sheet deliveries, believing that these sheets marked homes for home invasions! Thankfully for Strickley, some Redditors appreciated this initiative and thanked him for the service. Another Redditor who is afraid of bugs said she will certainly be placing dryer sheets in her mailbox. We hope that it works out for her…

Bug Repellent

Indeed, bugs are a big reason why people place dryer sheets in their mailboxes, according to Strickley’s Reddit post. He explained the horrific surprises that sometimes lay waiting for him inside mailboxes, such as yellowjacket wasp nests! A painful and potentially serious sting from one of these little devils is no laughing matter. Sometimes, these nests will be right at the back of the mailbox, according to Strickley. If dryer sheets had even the smallest chance of repelling yellowjackets, you can bet we would keep plenty of dryer sheet packs at home!

Insect Warfare

Strickley expressed his anger at having to deal with these stinging invaders. He will sometimes place his hand within the mailbox, oblivious to the new thorny residents, who do not take kindly to unwelcome visitors. Strickley claims to have been stung ten times in 2020 on separate occasions. Ouch! We might never have considered that being a mailman is a particularly dangerous occupation, but for those with was or bee allergies, a sting is not just a painful shock.

Stinging Season

You might then be wondering when yellowjackets are most likely to shack up inside your mailbox. Spring and summer are the most popular seasons for nesting yellowjackets. The fierce heat of these sunny seasons forces yellowjackets into cooler shelters. These beautifully scary insects love mailboxes in particular, as they are safe and shaded dens. You can imagine that a mailbox would be a great hideout for any little creature. Coming back to the dryer sheet method – how do they help?

Better Safe Than Stung

Strickley cleared things up with his Reddit post. He said that dryer sheets work solely as a “preventative measure”. The dedicated mailman will happily take things a step further if they get out of hand and will let the homeowner know the situation. He isn’t going to take any chances with the yellowjacket residents, and he leaves notes informing the owners that he will not be working in their property until the nests are gone.

Mailbox Vigilantes

Beyond mailmen, ordinary folks also use dryer sheets to keep their mailboxes (hopefully) safe. Staci Hoppes posted on Facebook in 2019 to inform her followers about the sweet-smelling hack. In her case, she was taking on an ant infestation that had erupted in her mailbox. She was also interviewed by Today, where she assured the interviewer that she has not seen a single ant since. Take that, scientists! Even if the science is sketchy, it does seem to work.

Staci’s Seal Of Approval

According to the mother, “I use it mainly when I start seeing any issue with ants, and it seems to take care of the problem rather quickly,” she said. “I haven’t really had a problem with anything other than the ants, so I’m not completely sure. But I’ve not noticed any other bugs around while the dryer sheets are in there.” We know now, on Staci’s good word, that ants can’t stand these dryer sheets.

Bug Busting Proof

We have to know what it is about dryer sheets that bugs cannot stand! Do they hate being reminded that they don’t have any clothes and take offense, leaving in a huff? Probably not. Rather, it is more likely something to do with the strong scents of dryer sheets. We know that yellowjackets react strongly to certain strong smells. Did you know that plenty of bug repellent brands include ingredients like cloves, citronella, and eucalyptus?

The Intolerable Smell

It makes sense then to insert dryer sheets into your mailbox, especially if they have a strong and appropriate aroma. Insects will not even go near your mailbox once they get a whiff of the scents that they cannot stand. So, both homeowners and mailmen can then look forward to a pest-free mail experience. Amazingly, kicking bugs out is not the humble dryer sheet’s only function! It is incredible how many uses we can get out of ordinary home items.

Why We Use Them

Dryer sheets are most commonly purchased to soften and refresh our clothes. We love having gentle, fresh-smelling garments. It really makes such a difference to your quality of life. These nifty sheets will also reduce the static properties in clothes that cause them to stick to each other. We are sure that most dryer sheet brands will not include “insect-repellant” on their products’ list of functions, however. This could be a potentially game-changing marketing opportunity!

Any Sheet Will Do

The best part about the dryer sheet mailbox hack is that it is completely affordable. One need not splurge on the laundry item, according to Strickley in his Reddit post, the garden variety will work. All that matters is a strong odor. Strickley did insist on replacing the dryer sheet occasionally, as you will want the smell to be as powerful as needed. So, are you convinced yet? Have Strickley and co. changed the way you do mail for good?

The Altruistic Hack

You might not want your mailbox smelling like cloves. You should know that your mailman would greatly appreciate it, though. Beyond mailboxes, post workers have a few other tips for their colleagues related to not getting stung. Rather than perfume or aftershave, some mailmen recommend a bug spray aroma. They also need to be on high alert when munching candy or other sugary snacks. This is all sound advice, but we really should clear up the scientific validity of the dryer sheet hack.

The Open-Minded Scientist

We now return to Sonja L. Swiger of the Texas A&M University, who despite having been critical of the dryer sheet method’s science, also cleared up her stance on the matter. Despite there being no scientific proof for the mailbox hack, that is not to say that it doesn’t work. There simply is not enough research or scientific proof to the method for an academic ruling, according to the etymology specialist. We would love to see a study conducted, though.

Mailbox Upgrades

Even if you are yourself doubtful as to whether the dryer sheet method works, Strickley has pleaded for owners to allow him and his colleagues to do it. In his Reddit user, he assured the users that if they find a mysterious dryer sheet in their mailbox, it was placed there with good intent. All they want is to scare dangerous insects away from their workplace. So, there you have it: the mailman’s savior! We want to know look at some other dryer sheet hacks that might change your life in other ways.

Artists often use the acetone within dryer sheets to clean their paintbrushes. The same logic can be applied to sticky nail polishes, especially the types that have glitter in them. Soak a single dryer sheet in your nail polish remover and then wipe your nails with the sheet. You will be amazed at how easily the coating comes off. This saves you having to scrub your nails roughly and you will quickly see your nails coming through.

Cleaning Up The Iron

If your iron is covered in gooey starch remains or scorch marks then a dryer sheet can easily return the metal surface to clean safety. We suggest two different methods for this hack. You could move your iron over a dryer sheet with the low heat setting on. This will strip away the gunk. The second mothed involves unplugging the iron and then scrubbing its surface with a damp dryer sheet. Either strategy works wonders.

Thankfully, dryer sheets can be rubbed up and down their exterior to take a lot of dirt and grime out.
